Welcome to a Swansea Bay website

It’s always good to welcome a new Swansea Bay website – even more so when its subject matter is as iconic as Mumbles Pier.

This month’s devastating blaze at Hastings Pier illustrated how fragile the UK’s grip on our complex social history can be.

So web users should be encouraged to take the charabanc on a glorious day trip to http://www.mumblespierdevelopment.com/. Well, bookmark it at least.

Redevelopment

The Mumbles Pier and Foreshore development is a £39m privately-funded redevelopment project conceived by pier owners Ameco.

Plans include a hotel, apartments, restaurants, leisure complex and the Victorian pier’s restoration complete with new lifeboat house.

Difficult times need private enterprise solutions to boost tourism and economic regeneration – and this fits the bill nicely.

Insight

The website aims to deliver an insight into plans to restore the pier.

Its creators write: “We hope you share our passion for this iconic part of Swansea’s heritage. More importantly, we want to tell you about the vision of how this famous landmark can be the key factor in creating a modern regional visitor and tourist destination.

“As well as providing you with news and background, we hope to answer your questions about the restoration project, how it is to be funded through a redevelopment scheme and how it will benefit Swansea, Mumbles and Gower.

“There’s no question that the pier holds a special place for many generations of residents and visitors.

“It’s full of memories and a little bit of magic that stays with us from childhood. It’s somewhere that you can sit and never tire of the sweeping views of Swansea Bay. It’s a piece of our past that deserves a future.”

Video blog: Village Hotel, Swansea

Today, I'm trialing a new Flip Mino camcorder by producing a video blog on a tasty PR coup for my client, the Village Hotel, Swansea.

The video’s a little rough at the edges but I reckon that lessons learnt here will stand me in good stead for future productions.

Coming to a Sunday carvery near you soon … http://bit.ly/b9aRS4

Celebs rally for good causes

Big names from around South Wales helped drive ticket sales for last week’s EuroMillions draw.

They understand that good causes around the UK benefit from sales – and it was good to see them doing their bit in the media and PR drive.

The October 8 EuroMillions draw had an incredible £112m jackpot.

And celebrities asked to detail how they’d use such a life-changing windfall came forward with their thoughts.

The media used some of them.

Lifeboat

They range from buying a new Mumbles lifeboat (The Wave radio presenter Badger) to creating a world-class Tour of Wales cycle race (Swansea-born Olympic and world champion Nicole Cooke).

Swansea panto star Kev Johns would buy everybody a copy of Big Issue; Port Talbot charity fundraiser Captain Beany would help the environment.

Haverfordwest-born Jamie Owen, the BBC Wales newsreader, said: “I’d share the money with my brothers to keep the peace.

“I’d buy some mountain land to save it for the nation; I’d buy land in towns and cities to turn into parks for people to enjoy and to encourage the natural world to prosper. Wide open spaces are good for everyone’s health.”

The jackpot was the fourth largest ever available in the UK.

Celebrity dreams – How would you spend a £112m jackpot?

Captain Beany Charity fundraiser and campaigner, Port Talbot Simple. I’d divide the entire £112m equally between charitable fundraising efforts, local community-based projects and environmental and ecological organizations.

Badger Breakfast presenter on The Wave It sounds bizarre but I have a list for such eventualities – and have had for a few years! I’d buy mum and dad a house closer to ours and there’d be lots of charitable causes I’d help anonymously, Of course, I’d give the RNLI £2.7m for a new Mumbles lifeboat; it’s been a tough job for all the fundraisers to hit that target in these difficult times.

Kev Johns Actor and broadcaster, Swansea Wow! £112m … with that sort of money you could do some good and spoil yourself! I’d buy four houses … a dream home in Swansea and one of those lovely seaside homes in Tenby. Next would be a mews home in London and an apartment overlooking the Hudson River in New York! I’d set up a foundation to support young people training for a career in the arts and I’d buy a Big Issue for everyone.

Nicole Cooke Olympic and World Champion cyclist, born in Swansea The bulk of the money would be spent on charities and medical research. I think cycling could be involved as a way of helping children and people in need to enjoy the fun and freedom of cycling – using tandems, tricycles or electric bikes as part of therapy or care. I’d also like to set up the best international race in the women’s cycling here in Wales – something like a Tour of Wales that brings international stars to all parts of our beautiful country and also create a women’s cycling team that trains hard, races hard and plays hard! Finally, I’d like to put something aside towards my Mum and Dad’s retirement.

Jamie Owen BBC Wales newsreader, born in Haverfordwest If I won, I would share the money with my brothers to keep the peace. I would buy some mountain land to save it for the nation, and buy land in towns and cities to turn into parks as breathing spaces for people to enjoy and to encourage the natural world to prosper. Wide open spaces are good for everyone’s health young and old.

Community Times puts Mumbles on the map

The latest edition of Mumbles Community Times has taken an innovative approach to embracing the tourism market.
Editor Joanne Caulfield commissioned illustrator Claire Wiles to produce a map of Mumbles, revealing where some of the villages most useful businesses, services and attractions are located.
Claire produced a highly colourful affair which Joanne is pleased to present across her Easter/Spring edition's centre-spread.
Categories highlighted include clothes shops, takeaways and hairdressers.
Restaurants listed include Peppers, Patrick's and The Pier. Gift shops catalogued include Shaker Shack, Blades and Cosmic Elf.
The magazine - now a 96-page A5 glossy - plans to run the feature through to the end of summer.
I hope such innovation has the desired effect, with tourists heading for the enterprises pinpointed and those enterprises then acknowledging the power of the press.

Swansea Bay media just got more stylish

The second edition of promising new style mag Edge is about to land in selected Swansea area boutiques.
But you can take an advance peek at its front cover right here - http://twitpic.com/11jzfb
Issue one was picked up by Media Master on a pre-Christmas shopping expedition to Mumbles' fabulous Newton Road. I think it was discovered in fashion shop Pebble (http://www.pebbleclothing.co.uk/) as Mrs Media Master tried on some vaguely ethnic top thing.
Edge is a vivacious addition to the Swansea area's media circuit and the good folk there seem to have their heads screwed on.
They arrange door-to-door delivery to high-end households in areas such as Lisvane, Cowbridge, Monmouth, Langland and Mumbles. Swansea's M&S (http://www.marksandspencer.com/) is stocking Edge.
A full page ad is ratecarded at around £500 and the list of early advertisers is impressive.
They include Cardiff's Capitol Shopping Centre (http://www.capitolshopping.co.uk/), jeweller Pravins (http://www.pravins.co.uk/), Cowbridge boutiques Visage (http://bit.ly/b5DnNE) and Superdry (http://www.amicicowbridge.co.uk/), Swansea jeweller Tyler Jenkins, Swansea restaurant Penthouse, salons, hotels and bars.
The new front cover promises Shoes! Shoes! Shoes!, new nudes ... and Jamie Roberts. Not all on one page, we hope.

Rhod Gilbert defies time in Swansea

Comedian Rhod Gilbert makes it into the just-out February edition of Swansea Life magazine. Favourite holiday destination? "Mumbles - magical!" Well said, Rhod.
Speaking of which, the funnyman's on BBC TV Wales tonight (http://bit.ly/a65MdN), having been filmed at two Swansea businesses.
As part of his new-job-for-Rhod series, a film crew observed him in the Kingsway premises shared by hairdressing enterprise Andrew Price (http://www.andrewpricegroup.com/) and cosmetic clinic/medical spa Defy Time (http://www.defy-time.co.uk/).
Dishing out finely crafted bobs and revitalising body wraps, you would imagine, didn't come naturally to our man from the west.
Incidentally, a little birdie - well, Mark Ronconi, of Business Web Marketing (http://www.b-w-m.co.uk/) - tells me that star of the show could well be Defy Time's artistically inclined Katie Schaverien.
I can't wait to see the programme - today (Tues), 10.35pm, BBC1.

Cambridgeshire media tips for Swansea Bay

There's much fresh thinking and innovation on the Swansea Bay media circuit these days.
Recession, technology and web evolution are among the most influential factors.
It means we have small fellas such as the Pontardawe-based Community Magazines thriving alongside big players such as BBC Wales.
If you don't know the Swansea area's Community Magazines, by the way, they have local editions for communities as diverse as Brynaman, Glynneath, Taibach and Mumbles and circulate an impressive 113,000.
The industry changes mean that I'll make every effort to clock 440+ miles one Tuesday in May to go to Cambridgeshire and back.
The UK’s first Specialist Media Show - http://www.thespecialistmediashow.com/ - will have conference sessions, an exhibition and workshops for media pro's and others. It'll attract editors, ad pro's and marketing managers plus people from many supply businesses.
Show organisers have also created the Specialist Media Pioneer Awards, recognising innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.
They say: "Whilst newspapers and mass media are struggling to find new business models, independent specialist media are applying innovation and entrepreneurial thinking."
Magazine Athletics Weekly, for instance, set the pace by selling digital editions on an iPhone app, Cricket World magazine has a website with more than 1.1 million unique users and live TV webcasting, and http://www.thefrenchpaper.com/ provides a news service for ex-pats in France.
Show figurehead Carolyn Morgan said: "Independents are prepared to innovate and experiment with all the new media channels, and we want to celebrate that and inspire others.
"The challenge for content creators is to deliver in ever more useful and valuable ways, whether through digital, mobile, events or print."
That goes for the Swansea Bay media too. If anybody wishes to join me on a Peterborough adventure, just give me a shout on 07758 745240.

Swansea Bay success as site hits the top spot

Brilliant news for Swansea Bay website Gower News - http://www.gowernews.co.uk/.
Their Google search ranking for the term "gower news" is number one! Not bad for one of the freshest faces to emerge on the Swansea Bay media circuit.
They also clock top 10 rankings for the terms "gower tourist information," "gower," and "gower peninsula swansea."
A big help here is that the website's linked directly from Mumbles Tourist Information as the centre's main source of Gower-related information.
Average article views on Gower News is 250/day, with a total of 30,500 article views since October.
Top content by topic includes nature, history, beaches, camping, events and what's on.
Success like that, I love!
