Media Master makes public sector breakthrough

A breakthrough on the contracts front: Neath Port Talbot Council have just placed me on their approved tenderers list for one element of their communications and marketing framework.
It's only a small part of the overall picture but just to get through the public sector tendering process was a delight.
Success follows a number of failures ... and a lot of graft to overcome the burdonsome paperwork.
It's not a guarantee of work, just assurance that I'm on any relevant shortlist for the next two or three years, but it's a step in the right direction.
The list has a number of big names and it's pleasant to be in good company.
They include Cardiff's Golley Slater, Quadrant Media and Freshwater UK, and London's Ridler Webster.
For the record, other successful operators included: Beaufort Research, Port Talbot's Get Yourself Noticed
Greenfield Media of Cardiff,  Newport's Icon Creative Design,  Mosaic Publicity of Essex, York-based Product Development Corporation, Barry's Push4, Cardiff firm Semaphore
Coventry's Bridge Group and Manchester's Vision Twentyone.

Media boosts Swansea Bay Super League first

Thursday, April 1, sees the first professional rugby league game in Swansea Bay.
Super League outfit the Crusaders - complete with Gareth "Alfie" Thomas - are set to face London rivals Harlequins RL at Neath RFC citadel The Gnoll from 7.30pm.
It's great news for the area and great for the Crusaders, coached by league giant Brian Noble, that they can make a splash so far away from their new Wrexham home.
Andy Pearson Publicity was engaged to help publicise this evangelical sporting mission to South Wales and readers of the South Wales Evening Post over the past few days won't have missed three front page ads for the game.
They were one of the publicity options taken by the club's marketing man Richard Jones. Others included special ticket offers into some of the area's biggest employers, including Swansea Council thanks to internal communications manager Debbie Williams.
Those who've not seen pro-rugby league before are encouraged to attend - it's a tremendous sport played by incredible athletes.
Ball-in-play time is huge, the try-count is generous and the collisions are muscular and make the hardest of us wince.
Moreover, Wales' only Engage Super League club have made a styong start to the 2010 campaign and I predict a healthy win over the Quins.
Get there in good time ... the Engage Super League authorities like to see colourful family entertainment before kick-off.
Crusaders prop Mark Bryant told Media Master: "The people down in South Wales were fantastic when we were based there last year - they gave us some amazing support.
"Some of them still travel to Crusaders games, both home and away, which is phenomenal, so it's good to go back down there. We're really looking forward to playing at The Gnoll."
Alfie, by the way, is likely to wear the full-back's No 1 jersey.
Ticket prices for Crusaders v Harlequins start at just £8 (adults) and £4 (kids) - great value. Call 0871 221 9511.

Swansea Bay media scene preps for wedding season

South Wales Evening Post telesales manager Amanda Nicol has let me know the ad prices of a forthcoming new special.
It should provide a decent promotional opportunity for any business connected with weddings.
The paper's South Wales Wedding Planner magazine is due out in June, edited by Swansea Life editor Wyn Jenkins. Amanda says that 7,000 will be printed, on sale for £1 across Swansea Bay in supermarkets and newsagents. It will be free to advertisers, key wedding suppliers and fairs.
A glossy A4 publication, it's due to feature 112 pages of info, style tips and beauty advice.
The magazine format should mean a long shelf life - readers will keep it a lot longer than they would a traditional newspaper supplement.
Ad prices ain't half bad for a niche publication with a tight geographical spread and with the daily marketing push of the Evening Post.
A double page spread is £562.50 (exc vat) for the launch edition and £450 if you take one in the follow-up October edition.
Full pages are £343.75 (£275) and half pages £225 (£180).
Premium rate pages such as the back and inside cover are available as are directory listings and £25 hyperlinks from the sister website, http://www.southwalesweddingplanner.co.uk/. Already on the website, incidentally are Smooch Wedding Rings and household heating experts Calor.
If your business is bridal gowns, hair, beauty, photography, wedding transport, jewellery, floristry or venues, give me a shout to discuss your options ... and a few tips on how to get the best out of this opportunity.

Nigel's Gnolledge worth harnessing

Nigel Dudley is out and about with photographer Andrew Jenkins today as the new editions of Neath Gnolledge and Valley View are put together.
However, that didn't stop Nigel giving Media Master a progress report this morning.
His message was simple: Media advertising can work wonders.
He's very excited about the call-tracker facility he offers advertisers - it allows them to gauge the response rate to ads in the two Neath Port Talbot glossies.
Nigel told me: "The two titles have created 318 phone inquiries in the past three weeks - more than six hours of inbound calls.
"More than 100 phone leads are being generated every week for local businesses."
Of course, inquiries are also generated through websites and walk-ins.
Hypnotherapist Sue Preston said: "I've already had two bookings as a direct result of the feature/advert in the latest Neath Gnolledge.
"Most clients book an average of six sessions with me, as well as recommendations to friends and family, so my feature/advert paid for itself in the first week."
Next issues due out: 3 May. The May/June Neath Gnolledge will feature Peter Morgan Estate Agents on the cover and inside. They are about to celebrate their 30th anniversary of business in Neath.

Media tales set to inspire Carmarthenshire business

I've just put the finishing touches to the April newslettter of Carmarthenshire's FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) branch.
This will be the fourth monthly missive emailed to members by the branch committee.
It's a great way of keeping the 600 county-wide members in touch with the local, regional and Welsh worlds of business.
The membership is so diverse that not every news items will interest them all. However, the hope is that there's plenty to inspire.
April's edition includes:

Click Businesses heading for Llanelli’s Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club to learn how to tap into the lucrative golfing tourism market.

Swansea media man Kev takes to blogging

Kev Johns continues to expand his portfolio. The radio presenter, after-dinner speaker, Swans announcer, panto dame, author and much more is now the writer of a weekly blog.
This Week with Kev appears on the Swansea Sound website, the latest edition being accessed right here.
It aims to sum up the week as he's lived it.
Hence, this week we hear of on-the-road communication with song star and charity walker Paul Potts as he trudged towards the Royal Albert Hall,  a live on-air chat with actress Dani Harmer (BBC TV's Jacqueline Wilson-inspired Tracy Beaker) who's touring Wizard of Oz with Joe Pasquale.
Todd Carty is another actor to get a mention, along with shows Grange HillTucker's Luck, Eastenders and Dancing on Ice.
There are also namechecks for Swansea's Pentrepoeth Primary School, Bishop Gore School, Swansea City's Albert Serran and Guillem Bauza ... and a fella called The Scary Guy who lectures on bullying, name calling and prejudice.
Keep blogging, Kev!

Lake aims to make a splash on Swansea Bay media circuit

Ben Evans, of hugely popular young Swansea Bay-based rock broadcaster Nation Radio, tells me that April sees the return of a colourful key presenter.
The station has signed up 26-year-old Allan Lake who's done the rounds of terrestrial radio services with his own unique style.
For the past year he has been busy establishing an online talk station based in Cardiff.
Ben, the station programmer for Nation, said: "We're pleased we didn't have to look far to find our new breakfast show.
"Allan's made South Wales his home and has built a great relationship with his audience during stints at Red Dragon FM and here at Nation previously."
Allan told Media Master: "Whatever we do, we hope to give people a bit of a smile in the morning. The South Wales sense of humour is amazing so we'll definitely be having a laugh on the phones."
Lake's return follows Nation celebrations as it recorded its highest ever listening figures. It's part of the expanding Town and Country Broadcasting empire which also features the likes of Bay Radio, Scarlet FM and Radio Carmarthenshire.
Ben said: "Allan's appointment is the latest in a number of developments through 2010, which began with Nation expanding its coverage on DAB Radio.
"Nation is becoming a proper Made-in-Wales success story. Our listeners are as passionate about the station as we are, spreading the word to more and more new listeners every day. Our new breakfast show gives them even more opportunities to get involved."
Lake's Wikipedia entry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Lake - proclaims hims as being "Britain's most outspoken and fired radio DJ."
Listen in, folks ... could be interesting times ahead.

3D specialist Valley Design set for web launch

Look out for a new website coming soon from Valley Design - the text has been expertly edited by Andy Pearson Publicity.
I bumped into the company's David Pickering at this month's Swansea Business Show in the LC which I was glad to see covered by South Wales Evening Post business reporter Rupert Hall. David was interested in my skills as a wordsmith.
He's a dynamic individual with a great skills in 3D visualisation - and his services will be of great use to a wide range of forward-thinking enterprises.
Based in glorious Cwmgors, high above the Swansea Valley, David's passionate about his craft and is well worth a shout if you've got anything needs looking at with a 3D computer model.
You can call him on 01269 820578.

Buzz flies media flag for South Wales comedy

Out now ... a splendid new edition of South Wales ents and leisure mag Buzz. Catch it electronically by clicking here.
Comedian Paul Merton appears on the cover. That's convenient as the Media Master will be taking in his forthcoming improv show at the Grand Theatre, Swansea. Shame it clashes with the Taliesin showing of Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll ... but you can't have it all ways.
Illustrating how live comedy is doing remarkably good business at the moment, there are also features on the likes of Reginald D Hunter, Katy Brand, Rhod Gilbert and the Machynlleth Comedy Festival.
In other fields, there's a healthy preview for the annual Mumbles Mostly Blues and Jazz Festival, an exceptionally tempting ad inviting us all to see modmeisters The Lambrettas in The Rhondda and - thanks to an Andy Pearson Publicity press release - a pleasing mention of The Storys' final gig in Swansea this summer.
Buzz is a beacon of quality in the South Wales ents market. Keep up the good work, all concerned!

Swansea newspaper design tweak beds in with soccer promo

Swansea Bay's only free weekly newspaper has had a design tweak.
The Swansea Herald of Wales now packs a slightly more newsy punch.
Gone is the over-reliance on big photos; back are pages with a story count more traditionally associated with local papers.
It's still material that's been lifted from sister title the South Wales Evening Post, but it's an improvement nonetheless.
The latest edition - datelined March 25 - comes swaddled in a four-page wraparound plugging the Post's World Cup soccer-themed sticker collection.
Presumably a promotion brokered by parent company Northcliffe Media, Dream Final 2010 bears none of the preciously guarded logos associated with officially sanctioned Fifa merchandise. Hence, no national crests on the players' kits, no mention of this summer's World Cup and no photo of the famous trophy.
More disappointing is the apparent lack of commercial opportunity offered to local traders. It would've been good to see Messers Tevez, Ribery, Rooney, Torres and Ronaldo help fan the flames of Swansea Bay trade - even through some simple in-paper ad sponsorship. Perhaps that's still to come.
Anyhow, back to the Herald's refreshed news pages. The extra content makes the whole package a lot more readable and will make it easier for ad sales staff to convince potential customers to invest in newspaper space.
It also means there's a comfortable feel to the plethora of plugs for Evening Post features.
Best ad: Renault Swansea, specifically their use of a spanner-wielding Playmobil-style character. Stands out a country mile.
Worst ad: Bunnies "health club". Why continue with such seedy stuff?

Nigel and Andrew head off on photo odyssey

A busy day approaches for photographer Andrew Jenkins and the man behind glossy independent publications Neath Gnolledge and Valley View.
The snapper - a former military man, don't you know - is to accompany Nigel Dudley as material is gathered for the publications' forthcoming editions.
Nigel tells me: "Tuesday 30 March sees me and Andrew spend the day taking professional photographs of businesses in our next issues.
"They're due out for 3 May ... and I'm also planning a new Port Talbot issue.
"I have a number of appointments set up with new and existing customers. I've invited those who need new photos of the people and teams in their business to contact me.
"My belief is that people buy from people more than from anything else. The Neath Gnolledge and Valley View are set up to give background information about the people within the local businesses we promote.
"We illustrate how they are different, what they can add and why to choose them with real stories and testimonials.
"It all goes to build up a picture of the business, the people involved and who they are."
Another key feature of Nigel's commercial offering is that he puts a call tracking feature on the businesses that request it.
With call tracking, dialled numbers can be used in either customer after-sales or marketing campaigns.
Nigel's a decent guy so if you'd like to do business with the Neath Port Talbot area, give him a shout - 01639 607 152, nigel@neathgnolledge.com.

Swansea Bay success means opportunities

Well, some of the dust has settled on a fabulous ITV news victory for Swansea Sound, The Wave and their associates.
The big question for everyone in the Swansea Bay media now is: "How will our successful local bidders in the Wales Live alliance embrace this glorious chance?"
Will jobs be created for journalists?
Will strategic new business alliances be created with complementary professional information providers?
Can Swansea Bay really look forward to a genuinely credible alternative to BBC Wales news and sport?
I hope the answers are positive.
Job creation will be studied with a keen eye.
The winning UTV/NWN Media IFNC proposal is strong on its citizen journalism element. That's good because technology rightly makes everyone an information provider these days.
But any such contributed material must be subject to UTV moderation at the very least and, most preferably, to professional editing and packaging.
That should mean more job security and career prospects for those at our local radio stations ... and, hopefully, more opportunities for recruitment.
Strategic new professional hook-ups across Swansea Bay will be equally interesting.
Imagine what a force the South Wales Evening Post and Swansea Sound could be together.
But are the Post's Northcliffe Media bosses liberal enough - and sufficiently forward thinking - to consider such an arrangement?
The Post's low-key announcement of the Swansea Sound success yesterday suggests not. Indeed the two local radio stations weren't even name-checked in their hour of glory.
I understand why but it came across as needlessly petty ... it's a big, evolving world out there now and there's more to the local media than the local paper.
Everyone knows that and it's a fact that should be acknowledged a little more readily by Northcliffe's big guns.
Perhaps the Wales Live editorial chiefs will look to grassroots news and information professionals. They are, after all, a growing force.
BBC Wales has, of course, had the Wales-wide TV and radio field to itself for too long. ITV resources have been stretched too thinly and local radio has been increasingly careful with its journalistic spend.
So it'll be good to see an extended local and community reach of the new all-Wales media service. Inevitably, this will mean multi-skilling for journalists. That brings excitement for all - training opportunities and new ways of seeing work published.
Plenty more on this subject to come ...

Swansea Bay celebrations for successful media bidders

There's a big new name on the Swansea Bay media landscape ... and it's one the good folk at Swansea Sound and The Wave can be very excited about.
The Government has today named Wales Live as the winning bid to run an independently funded news consortium (IFNC) pilot projects in Wales. The Wales Live bid featured the two local stations under the banner of parent company UTV.

Meanwhile, Llanelli-based independent TV production company Tinopolis is part of a similar success story for Scotland.
Wales Live is a collaboration between Swansea Sound/The Wave owners UTV and North Walian publisher NWN Media.
Michael Wilson, managing director of UTV Television , said: “What a fantastic achievement for the Wales Live team!.
"We put our hearts and souls into winning this bid. With our partners NWN Media, we look forward to delivering a fresh and authoritative news service to the whole of Wales across TV, online and radio with the current ITV Wales News Team.
"The process is still on-going and we remain fully committed to moving forward on contracts."

The IFNCs will receive a total of £47m in Government funding over two years to provide local news content across the web, mobile and other new platforms, along with the TV slot currently occupied by ITV regional news. Funding comes from a £130m under-spend in the licence fee.
Wales Live will take over the ITV Wales news service - although a Tory Government could spell trouble for the whole IFNC scheme.
Government decision-makers said the winning bidders "understood the implications of convergence, demonstrating how television, local newspapers, the internet, local radio could work together in new and interesting ways."
They said UTV had a "clear vision for an innovative community-based approach in conjunction with citizen journalists and its newspaper partner, NWN Media."
Reserve bidder for Wales was Tinopolis, with a consortium featuring Swansea University, Bay Radio, the South Wales Evening Post, the South Wales Guardian, ITV journalists and others being left out in the cold.

Crusaders deserve Swansea Bay media splurge

Look out for significant Swansea Bay media activity by rugby league club the Celtic Crusaders over the next week and a half.
On April 1 they're due to bring the first ever Super League game to the area as Gareth "Alfie" Thomas and his teammates meet London rivals Harlequins RL.
That makes for an exciting night out in my book, an antidote to the disappointingly one-sided RBS Six Nations.
The Crusaders asked Andy Pearson Publicity to line up some decent visibility in the Swansea Bay media as the build-up progresses.
Our friends at Afan FM, Radio Tircoed and the South Wales Evening Post have all indicated an eagerness to run match ticket competitions.
Other organisations have put their hands up too to help herald a new dawn in Welsh sport. Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Trust and Swansea Council are among the organisations keen to run employee ticket offers.
Hosts Neath RFC, meanwhile, have also been quick to show their support.
A press just issued from The Gnoll reads: "We welcome Super League here for the first time when the Crusaders play Harlequins on April 1 at 7.30pm.
"It will be the first time the famous old ground has hosted top-class professional rugby league and, with the Crusaders beginning to make an impression from their new Wrexham HQ, great interest is already being shown in one of only two 2010 fixtures the outfit will play in South Wales."
Supporters have the chance to see both codes with a ticket package embracing the Crusaders’ return to South Wales and Neath’s Principality Premiership clash with Pontypridd on Easter Saturday for £20. For dual tickets click here.
Tickets for the Crusaders-Quins game are £10 adults, £8 concessions, £5 U16s. To buy, click here.

Media Master plunges in with Swansea Bay Business Life

With Media Master's own business looking to consolidate a more focused market, a new lane is being strolled this month: advertising.
For the first time, Andy Pearson Publicity has booked space in Swansea Bay Business Life which - by now - will have been mailed to more than 5,000 business people and decision makers.
It'd be welcome if some of them took serious notice of my advertorial. I'll report back in future weeks to discuss the response rate.
The ad, incidentally, features new logo artwork by Swansea's Sigga Design.
In the meantime, here's my blurb as it appears in the high-gloss mag, part of the South Wales Evening Post empire.

IN picking up Swansea Bay Business Life, you made a wise choice. I’m similarly astute in promoting my services here.
The magazine hits thousands of local decision makers, with content finely tuned for the vibrant local business sector.
That’s why you’re reading it and why those like myself, with brilliant professional services to offer, pay to ensure our profiles are raised in its pages.
However, this magazine isn’t the only place I’ll flag up my rebranding. Indeed, I urge all businesses to view the whole media picture in its full widescreen glory.
There are an increasing number of great opportunities for publicity because, thanks to production technology, the Swansea Bay media sector has fragmented markedly.
Choice was once limited to the South Wales Evening Post, Western Mail and Swansea Sound. Now there’s a thriving, multi-tiered communications industry featuring everything from fresh new local-interest websites such as http://www.gowernews.co.uk/ and music fanzines to high-end glossy mags covering style, the arts and lifestyle.
There are new niche broadcasters such as Afan FM and Nation Radio. Whisper it here, but even Swansea Bay Business Life has keen competitors in its lucrative market.
All this means that, although the promotional opportunities are there, the local media landscape has become increasingly difficult terrain.
That’s why Andy Pearson Publicity is essential in ensuring that every penny spent on your media strategy is wisely invested. Editorial pieces should be pitched at the right time to the right journalist, ad campaigns should be carefully considered and soundly structured, promotions should be placed to maximise sales effects.
My own unique database lists, in great detail, around 50 media operations with a foothold in Swansea Bay. It’s there to be used.

Media campaign is good news for Swansea Lib-Dems

He's at it again! The cheeky politician-cum-publisher Peter May has once more taken a few leaves out of the media's book in his Swansea West General Election campaign.
The politically neutral Media Master has already welcomed the innovative and energetic approach of Councillor May, a Lib-Dem cabinet member on Swansea Council.
And all I can say now is: "Keep 'em coming!"
His latest missive to flutter through this particular Killay letterbox is similar to an earlier campaign promo. Swansea World comes in A4 magazine form, has eight pages and is modelled on newstand favourite That's Life. Colourful and, in presentation terms, cheery without being brash, it features all the usual magazine tricks-of-the-trade.
On the front there's a big picture of the poll hopeful with his city in the background. Inside there are eight more images of the same fella.
Nick Clegg gets in there with a few photos of him (smiling), Gordon Brown features as well (not smiling) and David Cameron is, erm, nowhere to be seen. Plaid don't get a look in either.
It's clever stuff by the Lib-Dems who obviously see Swansea West as a key target this summer.
It'd be lovely to see the Tories bringing out their own version of the Daily Mail, Labour weighing in with a Mirror wannabe and Plaid giving us their own version of The Independent.
However, I've a feeling their own rather slow-out-of-the-blocks literature is going to be a little less eyecatching than that of Councillor May.

Swansea student media folk excel at poll time

Getting a student newspaper out can be hard graft.
You've got deadlines to deal with, an approvals process with the Students Union ... and you've got the volunteer nature of the journalists involved.
So well done to editor James Snaith and his team at Waterfront.
The day after the final votes had been cast in Swansea University's all-important union elections, the tabloid's 2010 Election Special was eagerly being picked up all around campus.
When many were still discussing the newspaper's previous splash - on Florence and the Machine coming to play June's Summer Ball - plenty more were now gripped by the poll coverage.
Laura Richards and Angharad Williams penned the front page lead which focused on a hotly contested race for Educational Officer.
Alun Rhys Chivers and Collette Bird weighted in with a page one piece on the 3am anointing of Luke Young as union president to extend his reign.
Inside the impressive eight-page special there are by-lined election pieces by Charlie Teasdale, James Taylor, Ben Donovan, Lleu Williams, Kimberley De Selincourt, Sophie Evans and David Lewis.
Photographic by-lines go to Tim Bird and Silvia Gremlichaun Mandler.
With the Easter holiday approaching the special edition was a good way in which to go out for this term.
Well done to all involved.

Action stations as new glossy edition his Swansea Bay

Action Network magazine is a curious mix of everything from global awareness and Welsh local interest.
Based in Cardiff, the free glossy has a multitude of regular pick-up points across Swansea Bay and much further afield.
The latest edition highlights the editorial team's broad outlook in a typical manner. The advertising mix is no less diverse.
The first editorial item features a solemn image of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to illustrate a four-page commentary on the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.
Nearby there are three pages devoted to a report on the Government's Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge scheme - and three pages on wheelchair-bound Eastenders actor David Proud.
West Wales musicals star Connie Francis is profiled in a one piece and that's closely followed by a look at St David.
Commercial supporters for Action Network's spring issue range from The Children's Workforce Development Council and the University of Wales Global Academy to Camp America Summer Camps and Oxfordshire's Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens.
Circulation of Action Network is said to be 30,000, with distribution targets including management to director level.
The people behind it - Hog Fever - say: "Our circulation department ensures the publication reaches ABC1 readers in some of the most prestigious organisations in Wales and along the M4 corridor, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and London."
They add: "We aim to keep readers abreast of some of the economic growth patterns relevant to the readership areas, as well as contemporary issues such as educational reviews, agricultural issues, modern business techniques and special needs advancements."

Swansea Media offers a chance for new kids

If proof's needed that there's a media platform for everyone, The Bay provides it.
This flourishing free glossy is now out for March - and it features a number of new advertisers who'll benefit from the mag's low-cost, touchy-feely approach.
New to Media Master are Street Chiropractor, Authentic Dating for Men and Coastal Galleries.
It's good to see them all using the media to make the most of their key messages. I hope they succeed.
Street, incidentally, claims to be Wales' only mobile chiropractor clinic.
The business offers services to tackle difficulties such as migraines, back pain, work-related injury, sports injuries, osteoarthritis, poor posture and joint pain.
Authentic Dating, fronted by Sasha Mitrofanov, is flagged up as a specialist in areas such as dating strategy and tactics for singles, getting your ex back, getting over your ex and confidence building.
It's an interesting concept and gathers much inspiration from Sasha's own life experience.
Coastal is owned by Chris Elliott. It's based at SA1's beautiful Ice House building, on the J-Shed side of the Sail Bridge.
The Bay ad heralds a forthcoming personal appearance by Irish artist and adventurer Philip Gray.

Spirit lives on as the Swansea Bay media tackles bullies

They've come in for stick over the past few years, but newspapers driven by the public sector do have their place.
Take Neath Port Talbot's Community Spirit.
Since late last year, this Welsh county borough has had no local weekly newspaper it can call its own. The Neath and Port Talbot Guardians fell to the recession, the Swansea-based South Wales Evening Post keeps up a strong sales presence and then there's the Post's free weekly insert The Courier.
Ad-based periodicals such as the Community magazines, Neath Gnolledge and Valley View have also taken a foothold.
But there's no getting away from the fact that some people in the great, historic towns of Neath and Port Talbot are feeling a little short-changed by the media.
Spirit fills a small part of the hole.
It's published quarterly by a consortium led by the local council and also featuring the police, fire service, health trust, health board, Environment Agency, the Council for Voluntary Service and Neath Port Talbot College.
In that sense, it differs from Swansea's The Leader and Carmarthenshire's Community News, both wholly created by the areas' respective councils.
Of course, there's little in the way of "negative" news in Spirit, put together largely by the council's Emma Gray.
However, serious issues are tackled.
The current issue - datelined spring - has a four-page pullout titled Beat The Bullies. It carries advice and guidance from the Neath Port Talbot Anti-Bullying Partnership and points out that even big names such as Charlotte Church, Chris Needs, Nigel Owens, Sarra Elgan and Colin Jackson have suffered bullying in the past.
This is a fine use of any newspaper and Community Spirit deserves praise for using its resources in this way.
Media Master hopes that this anti-bullying initiative bears fruit.

Media Master delights the Swansea press

Great to see the South Wales Evening Post taking a keen interest in the Media Master.
Adelaide Street-based reporter Rupert Hall penned a piece for his Business in the Bay page. This is the Post's improved method of keeping the Swansea business commuity up to speed on all that's good to know.
Today there are pieces on globetrotter Rosie Swale-Pope and dentist Darren Owakee who's just opened a place in Sketty.
Alongside them there's a substantial story about city centre traders group Swansea BID taking up a bespoke version of this blog's daily breakfast brief.
Headlined Master Stroke to Catch News, it tells how BID manager Russell Greenslade has harnessed the power of the Media Master to keep his organisation's members in the loop on Swansea' Bay's ever-evolving news landscape.
Hall reports that the service is thought to be a first for the UK. No other towns and cities have an independent agency which monitors the local news.
Its benefits to BID members are summed up by Russell, who says: "Knowledge is crucial to business and the Media Master is a fabulous way of pointing our members to the content useful to them."
Thanks, Russell ... and thanks, Rupert.

Lenny's Swansea media spotlight shines on Priscilla

Alison Lenihan continues to build an entertaining portfolio of interviews on her Swansea community radio show.
The former South Wales Evening Post character flags up on her Facebook page that her next subject will be Phillip Arran aka Miss CC Swan.
The couple are united for Lenny's afternoon show on Radio Tircoed tomorrow (Tuesday, March 16) from 2pm.
The presenter reckons it'll be an "hilarious two hours" ... and who am I to doubt her?
Tune in on the web - http://www.radiotircoed.com/ - or, if you're in the M4 corridor between Hendy and Birchgrove, on the good old wireless, 106.5FM.
CC, incidentally, plans to play WOW, Cardiff, in cabaret this Sunday (March 21). More eyecatchingly, the character has been a West End hit in recent months, playing alongside Jason Donovan in the up-and-at-'em Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Business show lures Swansea media folk ... and others!

Well done to Swansea radio blogger Mike Leahy for his efforts in staging the Swansea Business Show 2010.
It took place on Friday at the LC and brought out a few notable media individuals.
They included the South Wales Evening Post business reporter Rupe "The Scoop" Hall, editions of the new-look Carmarthenshire Life magazine and a dynamo from further east, Prabhjote Chada.
The latter is an interesting fella, new to many on the Swansea media circuit.
He seems to have more energy than the National Grid and more ideas than a Government think-tank.
In media terms, he's involved with community broadcaster Radio Cardiff. He broadcasts on the subjects to business and gadgets-made-simple ... and he's doing a good job by all accounts.
Prab's also launched Cardiff Business Online, a directory with a difference. Check out the funky logo right here.
An honourable mention, too, for others listed in the show's  guidebook.
They all helped to stage a colourful and varied show. Well done on all your efforts ... and don't forget where to come if you need to publicise your enterprise further - or if you need writing or newsletter services of any description.
They included: AIMS Accountancy for Business, Aquatherm Plumbing and Heating, Atech Graphics, Barry Training Services, Beach Software, Biz Mobiles, BNI, BCS Media, Business Sense, Call Catchers, Celtic Wine, Chwarae Teg, Clickbridge, Costco, Colourbox, Compare Wales, CTS Engineering, Davies and Co accountants, Dragon Innovation, Dividend Training, Dylan Thomas Experience, Dynamic Rock, E-crime Wales, 4 Networking, the Federation of Small Businesses, Flexible Support for Small Business, Giles Insurance, Green Dragon Energy, Inspiration, IntroBiz, ISO in a Box, Jakson Lee, LEAD Wales, Life Photography, Mac Guru Wales, Noremac Hygiene, NFU Mutual Insurance, Photographs Of, Ramada Jarvis Hotel, SIFE Bright Futures, Star in a Jar, Stupid Tuesdays, Swansea Business College, Swansea College, Swansea University American Football team, Sue Preston Hypnotherapy, Taybarns, Teimlo, Total Building Controls, Trevor Lewis Signs, Utility Warehouse, Valley design, Veritas Language Solutions, The Steven Williams Practice, the Welsh Business Show, Wolfestone Translation and the Zaal restaurant.

Swansea media duo make timely progress

The joint editors of the Community Times edition that slips through Media Master's Killay letterbox continue to make impressive progress.
Their new edition, datelined March, has a number of useful new editorial features and a few advertisers that haven't been too prominent in the past.
Editorial material offered by co-editors Lorna Davies and Joanne Caulfield includes a cinema review by Jeff Day (this month it's Avatar), a beauty review by Lorna, a day in the life of photographer Liam Reardon and a focus on Easter chocolate.
The advertisers who haven't made a habit of such promotion in the past include Home Instead Senior Care, the Swansea Excelsior Ladies Choir and Sketty's Edith Mai beauty and health spa.
This edition of Community Times heads for 5,000 addresses across Sketty, Uplands, Dunvant, Killay and Tycoch. If you'd like to speak to Lorna and Joanne about hitting that reasonably lucrative target market, give me a shout.

Media man Nigel's chances improved by show

Nigel Dudley was one of those Swansea Bay media folk spotted doing the rounds at Friday's Swansea Business Show 2010.
The publisher of Neath Gnolledge and Valley View would I'm sure have picked up some valuable new business contacts.
His glossy advertorial-based titles - one for Neath, the other for the Swansea Valley - have picked up a good commercial following in the past couple of years.
With well-defined geographical markets, high production values and each free magazine having a 10,000 print run, I reckon he'll continue to thrive.
Businesses to have appeared in all issues include Rhos Meadow, Peter Morgan and Ace Windows.
A new introduction this month, with the titles now at football-programme style B5 size, is the Medicine Centre, Neath.
A valuable feature of using these titles is the call tracking Nigel offers. Using this, businesses can trace inquiries and analyse the return on their advertising investment.
In February the 18 enterprises with call tracking numbers had 197 incoming enquires outside of email and actual visits.
The next issues are due out on May 3. Give me a shout if you'd like a chat with Nigel. He's a former teacher and an engaging individual with a pleasingly low-pressure sales style.
