Going green – the Swansea media can help


Any Swansea Bay business planning to tap into the ethical or environmentally-friendly markets should have a peep at Green Light.
This homespun A4 journal – only a few editions away from its glorious 150th – is the newsletter of Swansea Environment Centre.
It’s produced with great diligence, it’s tremendously chatty and it’s well-read.
One of its regular treasures is the back-page Diary, a tremendous list of events with a green lean – everything from local produce markets to taster sessions in crystal healing.
Lead story in the latest (February/March) edition is on the current Fairtrade Fortnight. There are plugs for an Oxfam coffee morning, an event at Mumbles’ Red Cafe, a lunch at Jersey Marine’s Towers Hotel and a show at the National Waterfront Museum.
Elsewhere, there’s a splendid little list of eco-links. They include Eco-star, Miksani, Traidcraft, Bishopston Trading and Bibico.
Other enterprises with a positive mention include Coastal Housing Group, looking to build in Swansea’s Prince of Wales Dock.

Former Swansea Bay editor makes his garden grow

David Hardy left his post as Carmarthen Journal editor around four years ago. But his influence on the Swansea Bay media scene lives on.
Today he’s the avuncular head of marketing and communications at Llanarthne’s National Botanic Garden of Wales.
One duty is to oversee production of the Garden’s regular magazine Yr Ardd. And very colourful it is too.
The spring issue’s just out (pictured) and features the usual mix of news, background features and publicity for forthcoming events.
Two elements in particular display how the Garden genuinely wishes to embrace the Swansea Bay community – and suggest that there’s plenty of room for other commercial partners and associates.
The first is a full-page ad for the Severn Link, the “flying cat” service due to plough a Swansea-Ilfracombe furrow from this spring. It reveals a marketing tie-up between the two enterprises. I hope it works well for both – and I urge other tourism-related organisations to hop aboard both the ferry and the garden.
The second is a glossy A4 flier insert from the Scarlets. It advertises four imminent home games which have publicity tie-ins with the likes of Princes Gate water, Pembrokeshire’s Bluestone Resort and Llanelli’s Stradey Park Hotel. The flier offers 10% off matchday ticket prices to Garden visitors. In these days of cluttered promotional markets, this is a fine effort by the Garden and the rugby region.

Swansea Bay leisure market gets media savvy

Free glossy What’s On In Swansea is a colourful fixture in the area’s media scene these days.
With the sales line of “Your essential leisure guide”, it features advertising from tourism, theatre, music, culture, events, dining and sport.
Its impressive 20,000 print-run means good visibility in places such as tourist information centres, libraries, council buildings, theatres, museums and galleries.
The March/April edition is just out and includes a number of good examples of publicising an enterprise through this journal which is helmed by Sketty’s John Hughes.
Immediately noticeable is a vibrant front cover treatment for a four-night show at the Taliesin. The marketing team there have got in with plenty of time to spare – the production’s not until the end of May – so have done well to trigger early excitement.
On the inside cover is an exemplary ad for the LC. It’s good for a number of reasons: bright images of people having fun, a slogan targeted straight at the What’s On market - “Spend some quality time with the family!” - and a confidence to keep the whole page utterly uncluttered. Da iawn, LC.
The Swansea Philharmonic Choir remain one of the city’s understated gems so it’s good to see them getting some publicity in well ahead of schedule. They host a Brahms Requiem concert with Pontrhydyfen soprano Rebecca Evans on March 27 so it’s good to see them making the most of an outside right-hand half-page.
A number of advertisers have secured a second bite of this issue’s cherry by offering prizes in the magazine’s wordsearch competition. They include Fairyhill, SoCocoa, the Gower Wildflower and Local Produce Centre and Castellamare. Well done, all.
John Hughes is an open-minded individual who’s always willing to listen to good ideas on how to make the most of advertising. Don’t be slow in going to him with ideas.

Swansea media tracks publisher's Plaid push

Back to the subject of all-things-Welsh glossy Cambria ... its publisher Henry Jones-Davies is to stand in the General Election.
He'll be a Plaid Cymru candidate for Preseli, Pembrokeshire.
Henry claims to be one of a "new breed of people’s representative (not politician) that can lead to real change in Wales."
He says: "The London parties have always let Wales down. Their politicians have their own agendas - they are concerned with the advancement of their own careers and their own interests, and with lining their own pockets."
I'm sure that contemporaries throughout the southwest Wales media will follow his campaign with interest.

Swansea Bay media chiefs mull over figures

The shifting sand that is the local news business, including that of the Swansea area, was illustrated dramatically this week.
Six-monthly circulation figures saw online readership rocket but print readership continue to decline significantly.
For instance, although the website of the South Wales Evening Post, Llanelli Star and Carmarthen Journal was more than 25% up, the print titles fell 8.8%, 4.3% and 5.3% respectively.
The picture from the industry standard ABC was similar for those media folk over in Cardiff, with Swansea-interest titles The Western Mail and Wales on Sunday rising in e-form but sliding in print.
The situation has already seen Establishment-baiting blog Inside Out inquire as to whether it’s time to consider a print equivalent of the BBC in Wales - a nationalised Welsh press power.
Unlikely, I would say – but there’s certainly a case for new, independent operators to start looking at business models which don’t demand large profit margins for people in Lond.
Incidentally, the web and print audience trends of South Wales newspaper publishers are reflected across the UK. Challenging times all around. Who’ll hire – or nurture - the visionary who can convert web traffic into riches?

Hywel Teifi saluted by Cambria editor

Cambria magazine is one which wears its heart on its sleeve and, with St David's Day on the horizon, it turns its attention to Welsh "flamethrower" Hywel Teifi Edwards.
"We've lost a dear friend and Wales has lost a peerless patriot and doughty champion," writes editor Frances Jones-Davies.
"His absolute belief in Wales, his passion for Welsh history and for the nation’s right - destiny - of self-determination are a lesson and an inspiration to all."
Cambria's spring edition is out now and has plenty to tickle the tastebuds of anyone wearing a leek or daff on Monday.
Other contents include the story of a shrine to St David, a visit to the Cambrian Mountains, a feature on rugby ref Nigel Owens and a look at Cappuccino Girls, the latest musical by Swansea's Mal Pope.

Farewell, Emma - and good luck from Swansea

The Swansea Bay media  is about to lose one of its most engaging reporters.
Emma Judd (right) has been a real character in the South Wales Evening Post newsroom.
Her humour and strong personality have seen her become popular with workmates and contacts.
With a couple of weeks left before she joins well-regarded Porstmouth paper The News, she's been reflecting on her time in Swansea.
She told Media Master: "The people of Swansea have given me so much diverse news to write about - from church fairs to murders!
"A highlight was helping Topic House, the older people's info centre in Mayhill, get names for their war memorial. One lady read my story and, as a result, ensured her father's name was on the memorial. Without the story, he wouldn't have been given the public acknowledgement he deserved.
"That was one of my best days ... and I thank all those who've made me so welcome."
Emma should enjoy England's south coast - she's been there before and even has the accent.
Good luck, Emma - and enjoy your forthcoming birthday.
She'll be 30, don't you know?

Swansea Bay memories of the 1984-85 miners' strike

The 1984-85 miners' strike seems an awfully long way off. Those Swansea Bay media folk who covered the story, however, are certain to retain vivid memories.
My own professional experience of the picket lines came as a newspaper reporter in Yorkshire in pits at Emley and Clayton West and at NUM rallies in communities such as coal-dusted Skelmanthorpe.
Such experiences can now be refreshed thanks to Ian Isaac, one of the NUM South Wales officials of the time.
He's written a book and has some launch events planned. Ian's got a wealth of fabulous recollections and is well worth engaging with.
When We Were Miners is due to be published on March 5 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the ending of the strike.
There's a launch event on Tuesday, March 2, from 7pm at the Railwaymens’ Club, Wind Street, Swansea. Another follows the next day from 7pm at Chapter, Market Road, Cardiff CF5 1QE.
On Thursday, March 4, from 7pm, there's a third event at Maesteg WMC, Temple Street, Maesteg CF34 9YY. On Saturday, March 6, from 11.30am, you can catch Ian at the Afan Forest Park Visitors’ Centre, next to the South Wales Miners’ Museum, Cynonville, SA13 3HG.
The strike was a pivotal moment in Welsh history that changed the character and outlook of valley communities. Ian was in the frontline of the struggle to retain the mining industry and to save valley communities from destruction.
His book recalls what it was like to be an area leader of the South Wales Miners before, during and after the strike.
He discusses the battles during that period from his position as a member of the South Wales NUM executive from 1983 to 1988, and as lodge secretary of St John’s Lodge NUM in Maesteg from 1978 to 1986.
It's fascinating - and important - stuff. It deserves a wide audience.

Swansea Bay commentator's Derby drama

If you listen to one piece of football commentary this year, listen to this - click.
It's the fabulous audio of Swansea Sound's Swansea City reporter Anthony O'Connell (right) putting a Derby County fan in his place during a few stormy moments at Pride Park.
Being harangued by the boisterous Ram, O'Connell advises him live on air: "You just watch your language, mate, I'm trying to do a radio commentary here.
"Hey, there's no need ... you're a grown man, watch your language. Watch your language or I'll call the police on you, right? Thank you very much."
Our man at the mic is then back addressing his listeners: "Just a few problems with the people in front. They need to learn to behave - that's the problem."
And, at last, back on to the football: "Clearly a red card - no arguing with that."
... but then our Ant's nemesis returns so the reporter retorts: "I'm trying to do a radio commentary here, mate, so if you don't watch it I'll call the police, right?
"Sorry about that, listeners - but we do seem to have an idiot in front of us."

The Swansea Bay media: a new wave

Those with a genuine interest in the future of the local media in and around Swansea Bay are urged to attend a friendly little gathering on Monday February 22.
The meeting aims to progress the work of a new organisation which hopes to stimulate fresh ways of developing local news networks.
It also wishes to create work for journalists who have found the workscape tough through the recession.
Members of Local News South Wales (LNSW) say: "The media world is changing rapidly – bringing new opportunities.
"Journalists, photographers and other media workers are finding new ways to make their skills pay.
"LNSW is an exciting new local news vehicle - a not-for-profit workers' co-operative for journalists, photographers and other media operatives.
"Based in Port Talbot, it in no way intends to compete for business with existing news providers or for the work of existing freelancers.
"The intention is to focus on quality journalism. LNSW will have a strong social enterprise and training ethos."
The co-op is up and running under a board of experienced journalists, with premises secured and a website planned. Market research is about to be carried out.
Interested?
Well, a few pounds will make you a member of the co-op - and, as a member, you’ll have a big say in the direction LNSW takes, as well as a chance to work for the organisation.
All pledges of support - no matter how large or small - are being warmly welcomed. The co-op would also benefit from any voluntary help on offer.

What will Swansea media learn from Westminster event?

Researchers at Goldsmiths, University of London, are among the organisers of an event which will interest many of those in the Swansea Bay media.
Their Westminster meeting is titled Democracy Without Journalists: The Crisis in Local News. It will reflect the fact that, as around Swansea, the local media is changing more quickly than ever.
The event will be hosted by the uni's Centre for the Study of Global Media and Democracy on March 17.
The gathering features some speakers with much to say on the issue of the UK's evolving local media.
Speakers include broadcaster Steve Hewlett, Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Centre director Prof James Curran and Leeds University Professor of political communication and director of research Stephen Coleman, right.
Also on the top table will be National Union of Journalists (NUJ) general secretary Jeremy Dear, Natalie Fenton, editor of journalism and democracy study New Media, Old News and Angela Phillips, founder of local news-and-info web platform East London Lines.
The event's blurb states: "Industry body The Newspaper Society notes that 101 local newspapers closed down between January and August last year while ITV has said it can no longer afford to provide a regional news service.
"Buffeted by the recession and the impact of the internet, the current business model for local news is facing collapse and, perhaps with it, the pursuit of local news that is in the public interest. The government has responded by setting up pilot Independently Funded News Consortia (IFNC) while the Conservatives have promised to scrap the pilots and to relax local cross-media ownership rules to safeguard the provision of local journalism."
This event could make the future of local news an election headline.
Organised by Goldsmiths researchers and the NUJ), it will highlight the importance of robust news coverage for local democracy.
Speakers will address:
• why politicians and the public should care about local news;
• the significance of local news for meaningful local democracy;
• the viability of the IFNC scheme;
• the need for public policy action to ensure a future for local news;
• possibilities for new initiatives in the provision of local news.

How the likes of Lucky can help Swansea's media

Trade shows, wedding fairs, business clubs, fashion spectaculars - all ways in which Swansea Bay's traditional media expands its reach.
Now you can add some hot, sweaty rock gigs to that list - and that can't be a bad thing.
Red Handed is a hot-blooded young men's mag based in Cardiff but with a decent foothold in Swansea. It's a fun read.
There's a new Red Handed Live arm to the business.
The capital's Clwb Ifor Bach will host three acts on Friday March 12 under this banner and, although most of us will be unfamiliar with the line-up, that's nothing to be concerned about.
Red Handed has been writing about Welsh music for nearly seven years so to further its commitment to the live scene they've taken a brave punt.
They plan to scour Wales' music venues to draw up shortlists to put on nights of exceptional music and fun.
The March 12 show features Strange News From Another Star and Lucky Delucci.
Strange News is a band with a new EP, Double Denim: Full Frontal.

Swansea Bay photo man flies flag for media

Terry Morris made his earliest strides in professional photography as a freelance with the Llanelli Star.
That was in the early years of the new century.
In 2006 he broke into a new sphere with the publication of his book Cool Cymru Collection.
It had portraits of Welsh icons such as Dame Shirley Bassey, Ryan Giggs and Kelly Jones. His Cool Cymru shot of Katherine Jenkins is on the right.
An exhibition ran at Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre. ITV Wales ran a documentary series produced by Llanelli media big guns Tinopolis.
Now Morris has opened a studio in Dafen and is set to celebrate St David's Day with a show of his most celebrated celebrity images.
They will be on display at Llanelli Library where another Morris book - Faces of Stradey Park - is a popular item.
Mark Jewell, regional library manager, told Media Master: “Cool Cymru Collection and Faces of Stradey Park are amongst the most requested books in Llanelli Library, so it's fitting that Terry will exhibit here soon.”
The development of a Swansea bay media talent is always to be celebrated - get along to chat with Terry on his big day amongst the bookshelves.

Swansea media boss goes green

The recently departed station director of The Wave and Swansea Sound has surfaced in southeast Ireland.
Carrie Mosley has become sales and marketing director of KCLR, the self-proclaimed umber one radio station for the counties of Carlow and Kilkenny.
The station has around 68,000 unique listeners each week.
Its promo blurb says it's "a great listen and fondly known as the heart of Carlow Kilkenny."
KCLR96FM has been on air since May 2004, operating from studios and offices in both counties with a team of full and part-time personnel.

Palestine aid mission tales from Swansea media team

Advance notice of a Swansea event which will help mark a remarkable journey by redoubtable members of the area's media community.
Ingrid Bousquet and D Murphy, of alternative video news team Undercurrents, drove to troubled Gaza with colleague Janet Hussein last year.
They joined a convoy taking humanitarian aid to the Middle East. It was a colourful expedition.
The trio are members of Swansea Palestine Community Link, which campaigns for justice for Palestine, and on Wednesday, February 24, from 7.30pm they're due to host a free-entry Swansea to Gaza slideshow at the city's Dylan Thomas Centre.
Also, elements of A Fistful of Poetry, a new book by Glais-based Richard Jones dedicated to the people of Palestine, will be performed by Helen Griffin and Joe Furlong.
Phil Broadhurst will present a short reading of his Swansea-Palestine blog Stories of Hope and Inspiration.
A Community Link stall will sell Fairtrade Palestinian products.
D said: ‘The people of Gaza are lacking most of the basic necessities so our convoy carried critical medical, maternity and post-natal supplies, as well as much needed materials for schools."
As well as delivering aid, the convoy raised awareness about the siege of Gaza.
It's a great cause and the February 24 event merits the support of anyone interested in the Swansea media and the plight of Palestine.

Swansea Bay: Your summer starts here, it seems

Interesting news for leisure and tourism operators from the company that runs the South Wales Evening Post.
Advertising managers at South West Wales Media - also behind the Llanelli Star and Carmarthen Journal - have just announced a re-launch for their online tourism platform South Wales Days Out.
Leisure rep Dawn Thomas tells me: "It launched last year and was well received by businesses and visitors.
"As spring's fast approaching and people are heading outdoors, the time's right to re-launch.
"It'll remind visitors and local residents exactly what South West Wales has to offer as a leisure and entertainment destination."
The site features tabs for areas such as What's On, Equestrian, Where to Go, Dining and Nights Out. There's Historic Buildings, Museums and Galleries, Parks, Gardens and Beaches.
Shopping's not forgotten, along with Sport and Leisure, Theatre, Gigs & Festivals, Theme Parks and Where to Stay.

Swansea Bay media duo cuddle up to the Scorpions

Two of Swansea Bay's most youthful media operations have become a key player in a new sports team.
Bay Radio and Nation Radio have linked up with Neath-based rugby league freshmen the South Wales Scorpions.
It could be a stirring combination - a new sporting spectacle for the region and two of the area's most innovative broadcasters. With God's game being a passion of mine, I wish all involved great success in this partnership.
The Scorpions' official radio stations for the 2010 season are part of the Town and Country Broadcasting Group that own six stations including Llanelli's Scarlet FM, Radio Carmarthenshire, Bridgend's Bridge FM and Radio Pembrokeshire.
Bay covers Swansea Bay, Nation a larger tranche of South Wales, including Cardiff, Newport and Swansea.
The two stations are pledging what is believed to be the largest amount of advertising ever for a rugby league club in Wales.
They plan broadcasts the week before each of the Scorpions’ 11 home fixtures, starting with a big-name friendly against Wigan Warriors at The Gnoll on Sunday (kick-off 2.30pm).
The Scorpions are the newest professional RL side in Wales. Following the game against Wigan, they will be playing 20 matches in the Co-operative Championship 1 against the likes of Oldham and Workington Town.
In addition to adverts throughout 2010, Bay and Nation will provide editorial support when needed in the form of interview opportunities plus a link to the Scorpions website on Bay and Nation home pages.
Bay and Nation logos will appear on the Scorpions’ home and away shirts and there will be advertising boards at The Gnoll. Both stations will have ads in match programme and links from the Scorpions website.
Scorpions’ owner Phil Davies told Media Master: “They’ve had us in as studio guests a few times already and Sunday’s Wigan fixture was announced first on Bay Radio. This will be the start of a long and fruitful partnership.”
Andy Griffiths, broadcast director of Town and Country, said: “I'm impressed with the club’s enthusiasm, determination to develop local talent and their already good relationship with the supporters and local community.”

Swansea Bay should enjoy Ryder Cup glow

The music's starting to play as Wales gears up for its first Ryder Cup. The media's going to be full of it ... and Swansea Bay business should do all it can to pipe up for this great commercial opportunity.
The whole Welsh Establishment is behind it, huge amounts of public funds have helped bring us this far ... and now the trumpets are sounding.
At least they will be when the Millennium Stadium hosts the first Ryder Cup celebration concert on Wednesday, September 29.
With the nation on a sporting high after Saturday's remarkable RBS 6 Nations fightback, stadium bosses today announced the gig.
Artist details for the Welcome to Wales gathering are sketchy - non-existent, actually - but the fanfare goes something like this: "Live Nation, the world’s largest producer of live concerts, (is) to stage Welcome to Wales; a unique multi-artist concert, introduced by celebrities and golf stars.
"It will be the signature event that will galvanize The 2010 Ryder Cup celebrations in spectacular style.
"Set in stunning surroundings and featuring musical performances by international superstars including popular Welsh artists, along with appearances by special guests, Welcome to Wales will also incorporate the introduction of The Ryder Cup teams from across Europe and the United States."
The golf tournament itself, Wales' biggest ever sporting event ever, will enjoy a global TV audience looking in on Newport's Celtic Manor Resort from September 28-October 3.
Businesses which haven't already looked at publicising themselves on appropriate media platforms should do so now. It's gonna be some party.
For a start, how about some speculation on possible gig stars ahead of tomorrow's Western Mail. The usual suspects, of course - Stereophonics, Tom Jones, Katherine Jenkins, Manic Street Preachers. But how about a few left-field guests as well? Let me know who you think should be there.

Swansea Bay literary scene has a big media pal

Swansea Bay folk with things literary to plug are advised to take a good look at quarterly magazine A470.
It carries information on Welsh literary events and encourages those organising or promoting such activity to get in touch.
The man to contact is Peter Finch - post@academi.org.
A470 is a pleasing low-noise fixture on the media landscape. It's described as an "information magazine" and is produced bilingually by The Welsh Academy, the country's literature promotion agency and society for authors.
Swansea Bay individuals with an influence on the content of A470 include literature officer David Woolley, of the Dylan Thomas Centre.
By my reckoning, the next issue should be available at arts centres in March 2010 - and you can be assured a thoughtful, eclectic collection of features.
Savvy businesses buying ad space include Welsh publishers Cinnamon Press (Marianne Jones, Shelagh Weeks, Holly Howitt) and Y Lolfa (Nigel Owens, Chris Needs, Mel Nurse).
The present edition, pictured, has elements such as an in memoriam piece to Dylan Thomas's daughter Aeronwy Thomas and news that celebrated Swansea University author James Hawes is to be a Wales Book of the Year judge.
It's a useful mix and a welcome addition to any coffee table or magazine rack.

Things get green, red and spiky for Swansea Bay

Today is copy deadline day for the next issue of a wonderfully spirited left-leaning publication by the name of Celyn. Its previous issue had some strong Swansea Bay links.
The journal's title translates as Holly and, as the its motto states, the intention is to be "green, red ... and a bit spiky."
The bi-monthly carries a limited number of ads, with advertisers including Friends of the Earth Cymru and the thinking person's blog site Wales Home.
Features in the January edition, pictured, included a well-judged report from Copenhagen's climate change conference by Ysgol Ystalyfera student Cerith Jones.
Last year's Welsh youth climate change champion, he summised: "The right decisions are neither easy nor popular, but leadership and ambition must be shown in order to do us and future generations justice."
A news item focused on protests by Climate Camp Cymru at a Port Talbot biomass plant and its plans to produce electricity from imported woodchip.
A powerful two-page piece headlined The Battle of Castle Square featured a first-hand description of the recent anti-fascist protest in Swansea city centre when members of the ultra-rightwing English Defence League came to town.
Anti-EDL feature writer Colin Nosworthy wrote ruefully of the media coverage: "The depressing facts were these: They got coverage, we looked as though we were on their level and spoiling for a fight."
Celyn's first edition was published last May and aims to provide a "non-sectarian vehicle for ideas and debate and to move beyond the party tribalism that is so deeply rooted in Welsh politics."
Their only "bottom lines," they say, are to be green, socialist, anti-fascist, anti discrimination, egalitarian, pro worker, pro Welsh language and committed to the extension of devolution.
Good work, ladies and gents - here's to a growth in your influence across Swansea Bay and the rest of Wales.

Swansea Bay journalists to debate industry issues

2010 brings more interesting times for journalists across Swansea Bay and, indeed, throughout the Western World.
Not only have they the news to report but also they must work in and for a rapidly changing industry of their own.
Locally, there's a UK Government debate over who should run the ITV Wales news service, the Swansea Bay's dominant news organisation South West Wales Media has just posted a trading loss, lively new grassroots media platforms are springing up ... and then there's the internet.
Much of this will come into sharp focus when the Swansea and District branch of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) holds its agm. It takes place at 6.30pm on Monday, February 15 in the Environment Centre, Pier Street, Swansea.
I remain the chairman of this branch and look forward to some intriguing input from fellow members.
Much has happened in the media in Wales in recent months and this annual meeting is a chance to take stock of those changes. As a union we aim to prepare the NUJ's response to these changes to defend the best interests of members.
So, if you're a member and want things to change this year and improve for the better in your working life please make every effort to attend and have your input into the NUJ and make it stronger.
Discussion points will include:
• NUJ Wales training - information about subsidised new professional development courses in Wales and the funding available to help NUJ members attend the courses.
• Independently financed news consortia in Wales - threat or opportunity for journalists?
• A report from the South Wales Evening Post chapel and other local media organisations
• Future activities - including a planned meeting with NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear.

Quiz kings see Swansea media celebrated in Cardiff

The Swansea media community was at the intellectual vanguard of a big night in Cardiff, I hear.
Former South Wales Evening Post reporter Roger Butler and ex-Post sub-editor Ken Smith played key parts in a quiz night attended by dozens of personnel from the South Wales print and broadcast media.
Indeed, Ken - secretary of the National Union of Journalists' Swansea and District branch - was quizmaster.
His proudest moment came when no team was able to answer correctly his stunning: "Who won the 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature?"
"OMG!" I hear you cry "It was German author Herta Müller who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed."
Well, on the night, not ever North Walian Roger - now a press officer with Carmarthenshire Council, could match your brightness.
Quiz kings were the fine trio pictured here - a team from ITV Wales.
The NUJ event attracted teams of journalists from the freelance sector, PR, students, Media Wales, ITV Wales and BBC Wales.
It was a fine way to draw the attention of journalists from Swansea and further afield to the excellent programme of training now being delivered by the union.
The NUJ runs a wide range of skills development courses from feature writing to web design.
By working closely with members, prominent industry bodies, universities and colleges, the union is are able to provide a wide array of courses that are topical and tailored to the needs of journalists today.
The NUJ is also committed to providing high quality training for its reps, a crucial factor in building effective union representation on behalf of members.
The NUJ offers a range of practical trade union training courses – all free to members.

Swansea celeb hunter set to join Daily Star

Colourful Swansea Bay media character Ed Gleave has announced that he's heading for The Smoke.
Wales' self-proclaimed leading celebrity columnist posted on his Facebook page that he's taking up a position with The Daily Star. He's freelanced for them in the past.
The 24-year-old joined the South Wales Evening Post as a sub-editor two-and-a-half years ago but will be remembered more for his Saturday column Celebrity Scoop (pictured).
Obsessed by celebrity, he'll be a perfect ambassador in the Star's headlong quest for tittle-tattle.
Photos on his Facebook page have him posing with stars such as Jordan, Simon Callow, David Frost, Leon Jackson, Sian Lloyd, Russell T Davies, Ruth Jones and Ioan Gruffudd.
Ed's due to leave South Wales in early March.
Those who read his column will follow his progress ... and will be interested to discover whether or not the Evening Post plans to appoint a successor to follow the celebrity trail.
